1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible L78 4-Speed
Presentation
Among the most potent Chevelles of its era, the 1968 SS 396 in L78 form carried Chevrolet's top 396ci V8, factory rated at 375 horsepower. This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible is finished in Matador Red over a black vinyl interior and pairs an L78 big-block with a 4-speed
Muncie manual transmission and a 12-bolt PosiTraction rear end. Reportedly fitted with L89-specification aluminum cylinder heads, this well-presented SS 396 is now being offered for auction in Texas.
Muncie manual transmission and a 12-bolt PosiTraction rear end. Reportedly fitted with L89-specification aluminum cylinder heads, this well-presented SS 396 is now being offered for auction in Texas.
The car left the factory in Matador Red and was repainted in the same color during a prior refurbishment, with the addition of black pinstripes and rocker panels. Exterior features include a twin-dome hood, a black grille and taillight panel, chrome side mirrors, and a power-operated black convertible top. The car rides on 14" steel wheels with polished SS 396 hubcaps wrapped in Firestone Wide Oval redline tires. The selling dealer notes crazing on the driver's door. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in black vinyl, along with a center console, a Hurst shifter, an AM radio, and a heater. Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for battery charge, fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature, with a VDO temperature gauge mounted below the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 49k miles.
Power comes from the 396ci L78 V8, which was factory rated at 375 HP and 415 lb-ft of torque, and drives the rear wheels through a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt PosiTraction differential with 3.73:1 gears. The engine breathes through a Holley four-barrel carburetor atop a Winters aluminum intake manifold, and a set of L89-specification aluminum cylinder heads is said to have been installed. Standard performance features include power-assisted front disc brakes, rear drums, and front and rear sway bars. Following the selling dealer's acquisition in 2026, an oil change and a rear differential fluid service were completed.
This sale will include a clean Mississippi title and a full-size spare tire.
