Among the most distinctive and sought-after iterations of the long-hood 911, this 1972 Porsche 911E Coupe represents the only model year to feature Porsche's unique external oil filler door, earning the coveted "Ölklappe" designation. It is powered by its factory numbers-matching 2.4-liter mechanically fuel-injected flat-six engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and was originally finished in Light Yellow before receiving a professional glass-out repaint in Guards Red along with tasteful RS-style modifications. Acquired by the current owner in 1986, this exceptionally well-preserved 911E has spent much of the past four decades in garage storage or climate-controlled indoor display, accumulating fewer than 10,000 additional miles during that time. Benefitting from recent recommissioning work that included refurbishment of the fuel system and renewed brake hydraulics, this rare long-hood Porsche is now being offered for auction in Texas.
Originally specified in Light Yellow (117-9-1), the body was professionally refinished in Guards Red during a complete glass-out color change early in the current ownership. The repaint included matching trim accents and a Guards Red engine cooling shroud for a cohesive presentation. As a 1972 model, the body retains its signature one-year-only external oil filler door located ahead of the right rear wheel. Additional details include body-colored mirrors and headlamp bezels, RS-style bumpers, a ducktail rear spoiler, Carrera script side stripes, chrome brightwork, pop-out rear quarter windows, and 15” Fuchs alloy wheels mounted with 2022-dated tires. The seller notes the car has remained protected from the elements for decades, spending extended periods in enclosed garage storage before residing in the climate-controlled showroom of a specialty Porsche repair facility from 2006 until 2023. The black interior has been tastefully updated with genuine Porsche 930 Turbo high-back bucket seats and features a four-spoke steering wheel, a Porsche-crested gear knob, VDO instrumentation with a centrally mounted tachometer, manual window winders, an updated Blaupunkt cassette stereo, and aftermarket speakers. The five-digit odometer currently displays approximately 15,251 kilometers, which the seller indicates corresponds to roughly 71,700 lifetime miles. When acquired in March 1986, the odometer showed 6,992 kilometers, believed to represent approximately 106,992 kilometers (62,500 miles), indicating that fewer than 10,000 additional miles have been accumulated throughout the current ownership.
Power comes from the factory numbers-matching 2.4-liter flat-six engine (serial number 6220549), featuring Bosch mechanical fuel injection and a lightweight magnesium crankcase. Factory-rated at approximately 165 HP, it sends power to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transaxle. Following decades of careful preservation, the car was recently recommissioned with extensive fuel system service, including a cleaned fuel tank, new fuel hoses, and fresh filters, along with replacement brake lines to refresh the braking system before returning the car to regular operation.
This sale will include a period Road & Track feature photograph intended for publication, documentation supporting the car's long-term ownership history, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, a car cover, and a clean title.

A 4-speed 911E? I have a base ‘67 911 that left the factory with a four speed but I never heard of a 911 E with a four speed. Also, normally an E engine has a green shroud. This one has a red one which is normally associated with an S engine.

@Bobror the vin is for a 72E , but it looks like the engine was "repainted" to match the outside. Look at the fan shroud strap, it's red too. 4 speed is weird. need to see the trans serial number

Correct. Green is a normal color of the shroud for a Model E. When this car underwent a color change, some trim highlighted with headlight bezels, rearview mirrors, and the engine shroud was paint-matched.
Transmissions used up to 1972 were considerably different than those used from 72 onward. The two types can be easily distinguished; the early type had the reverse gear at the forward left position while the later type had the reverse gear at the rear right position.
Second, third, fourth, and fifth in the five-speed are equivalent to first, second, third, and fourth in the four-speed.

@Upshift4 It's not a sportmatic. Porsche made an early-model and late-model 4-speed manual. This is the late-year 4-speed edition.

@Upshift4 In 1972, the 10-digit VIN did not specify Transmission type; instead, it gave you the model/engine variant, which determined the Transmission options that were available. In 72, that included a four-speed, a five-speed, and a sport automatic; a sport automatic was a three-speed. There were two versions of the four-speed and five-speed, late and early.
