The Beck 550 Spyder is a fiberglass-bodied recreation of Porsche's iconic 1950s 550 Spyder, and this example was built on a chassis produced by Chuck Beck at Beck Development in the late 1990s. Finished in silver, the car is powered by a VW-based air-cooled 1,835cc flat-four assembled by FAT Performance and paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Build highlights include EMPI HPMX 40 carburetors with a Tangerine Racing throttle system, a Porsche 911-style fan shroud, front disc brakes, a cable-operated shifter, and Bilstein gas shocks at all four corners. Acquired by the seller as a roller in 2021 and assembled over the following four years, this 550 Spyder replica is now being offered for auction in Pennsylvania.

The fiberglass body was painted silver by Beck Development in the late 1990s and carries removable Mobil Pegasus and rear dart vinyl decals, which the seller notes can be taken off at the buyer's discretion. The seller describes the tires as dated but in very good condition and fully usable, and reports that the car has seen very little road use and presents in exceptional condition. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The custom interior features newly recovered seats trimmed in a diamond-stitched pattern with silver thread matching the exterior paint, along with new carpeting, a backdated Special Edition shift and parking-brake cluster, a 14" Momo Classic Indy steering wheel with a walnut rim and black center, and an original 1955 Porsche walnut shift knob bearing a Porsche crest.

Power comes from a FAT Performance air-cooled flat-four, reportedly originally a Class 12 Baja race unit assembled by Ron Fleming and later converted to a dual-carburetor configuration, displacing 1,835 cc. It breathes through EMPI HPMX 40 carburetors linked by a Tangerine Racing throttle system and is fitted with a Porsche 911-style fan shroud, a 911 cooling fan and alternator, an external oil filter, a fuel pump with a pressure regulator, and a lightweight AGM battery, with the ignition timing set at 28 degrees to suit the dual carburetors. Power reaches the rear wheels through a stock Volkswagen 4-speed swing-axle transaxle with a hydraulically actuated clutch and a cable-operated shifter. Braking is handled by front disc and rear drum brakes with a split dual-reservoir master cylinder, while the suspension pairs a Volkswagen front beam and rear torsion tube with new Bilstein gas shocks at all four corners. The seller notes that the chassis was acquired as a roller from Special Edition in 2021 and describes it as a "transition-years" chassis originally built by Chuck Beck at Beck Development in Upland, California.

This sale will include a clean title listing the vehicle as a 1955 Porsche Beck 550.

@Mpdv1969 I don't have a definitive answer for this, only to suggest that in the USA in general ignition switches tend to be located on the right side. Porsche in general is the exception to that rule to an extent. Wish I had a definitive for you on that question but do not because I'm not the manufacturer.

@croy56 thanks - the car has been remarkable well cared for. I don't have a lot to add because the car literally is, 1) get in; 2) turn key; 3) drive away. The engine is unbelievable fun! Sounds good with the straight cut gears that are in the bottom end.

@croy56 what you notice is from the grommet seating itself. The door is a touch ajar from that.
