1968 Porsche 912 Coupe EV Conversion by Retroelectric
Presentation
This left-hand-drive 1968 Porsche 912 coupe was registered in California through the mid 2000s, at which time it was imported to the UK. Having since been registered with three keepers in the UK, it underwent an EV conversion that was performed by Retroelectric Cars. The full conversion — engineering, batteries, motor, suspension, and trim — is claimed represented an investment of approximately £70,000, and it has since been featured in Classic Porsche, was used in BBC One’s Antiques Road Trip Series 32, was featured in feature in the Daily Express, and participated in the Shere Hill Climb in September 2025. Recaro Expert Pro seats with Pepita upholstery have been fitted, and the car has 15″ Fuchs alloys, TracTive electronically controlled, semi-active dampers, adaptive steering, upgraded brakes, a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, a Porsche Classic Communication Management head unit, and a rear-view camera system. The EV setup reportedly allows for a 160-mile real-world range with a 16-module, 43kWh battery pack, CCS fast-charging capability, and a claimed 0-60 time of under five seconds. Acquired by the seller in 2023, this SWB 912 coupe is now offered in the UK with V5C registration, MOT and DVLA paperwork, records, and the removed drivetrain.
The EV conversion was performed by Retroelectric Cars and is claimed represented an investment of approximately £70,000. It has since been featured in Classic Porsche, was used in BBC One’s Antiques Road Trip Series 32, was featured in feature in the Daily Express, and participated in the Shere Hill Climb in September 2025.
The car was delivered with Burgundy Red (6808) paintwork and has H4 headlights and amber rear corner lights. Registration TRP 286F is taxed through August 2026, and the MOT is valid through February 2027.
The EV setup reportedly allows for a 160-mile real-world range with a 16-module, 43kWh battery pack, a 7kW charger upgrade, CCS fast-charging capability, and a claimed 0-60 time of under five seconds.
The owner reports the conversion involved the following details:
Bespoke engineering design of the motor cradle and battery enclosures
Fabrication of front and rear battery boxes, including powdercoating
Complete high- and low-voltage wiring harness build-up
Installation of batteries, DC/DC converter, battery management system (BMS), and onboard charger
Custom gear selector module build-up and pedal spacing adjustment
Commissioning of all EV systems followed by dedicated road testing
The suspension uses TracTive electronically controlled, semi-active dampers, and the car has upgraded Elephant Racing/Boxster braking components and adjustable steering, as well. The 15″ Fuchs forged alloy wheels are mounted with 185/65 Pirelli Cinturato Cn36 tyres.
The Recaro Expert Pro seats feature leather bolsters and Pepita inserts, a theme mimicked on the door panels, rear seat, dashboard, and custom console. The PCCM head unit is linked to door-mounted speakers and features a back-up camera system. Three-point inertial-reel belts are provided for the front occupants.
The MOMO Prototipo steering wheel sits ahead of VDO instrumentation with custom trim rings The five-digit odometer shows 50k miles, approximately 400 of which were added under current ownership.
The underside was repaired and resealed following the conversion, and the 220hp electric drive unit mounted low at the rear. A finned underbody battery enclosure runs beneath the cabin.
Paperwork that conveys with the car is displayed in the gallery, and the removed factory drivetrain is also included along with copies of the former US title.

I wanted to wait until the end to comment further. My earlier comment regarding the reality of being able to do a road trip comfortably [or not] in this EV was flagged non constructive. In a way, that's fair because I believe the subject is by now common knowledge. In the end, I'm sorry it didn't get a higher bid and it's pretty sad all around.

They didn't offer 911E's until '69, but if any car deserves to be badged as one, this is definitely a contender. It's definitely not really just a 912 anymore as far as that goes. Maybe 912E just to make it extra interesting, tip the cards a little.

Car has a similar weight as the original IC version and the weight distribution is 60:40. It is fitted with TracTive Semi-Adaptive suspension with options for different settings. I have driven down Shere hill twisty narrow roads and Sussex downs and had no issue taking fast corners and twists. Sorry don’t know the corner weights, but it took the corners faster than my 964.

Had a couple early 911's, when they were a lot cheaper than they are now. Loved them and they were fun. Not that into them now given the trendy IT car status they are and how much people covet/pay for them. But this, I'd take this! Even better that it is just a 912. Best of both worlds, cool and an EV. Color looks great too. Under 5 seconds though? Not bad, but I'd try to work on that a little somehow. Should be able to do better than that.

@bbckfh request for corner weights is an excellent question because the car's suspension and handling may be impacted by the engine/motor/battery switch-outs. And what is the top speed? Note that 912's were generally not galvanized before 1975.

If you love this, that's great. But there is something you need to know going in. If the "real world" range is 160 miles then plan on a "Real, real world" range of 100 miles. This is no longer a car you can take on any road trip without it being a pain in the #*&. My nephew is an ecologically minded young man who's only car is a Chevy Bolt that supposedly has a 260 mile range. He thought a 350 mile round trip from Portland, Or. to Seattle and back would be fine with some app he had on his phone to locate charging stations. Upon arriving at the directed station with little energy left , he discovered it was down for some kind of service and the next closest one couldn't accommodate his type of charging system. In the end, he described it as the "worst experience of his life". If short drives are all you want.....Go For It !

@faustinbo81 You are right, would be cheaper than changing out the port. Personally, I hate using adapters from unknown suppliers. I have not used one of those types of adapters, only used the J1772 to NACS. There is one that does both DC and AC charging available for CCS2 to CCS1. Maybe that would be the right one.

I love love love this car, but for the US, you will need to change to a Tesla port or a J1772 port. The CCS won't work in the US. We have been trying to buy an EV conversion in the US and this one is perfect other than the charge port. Long hood, great color. Dangit!

An EV @160 mile (or km?) range is plenty to get most anywhere and back with some added zip off the line - points for that. It would be interesting to experience the new suspension upgrade, the ride and cornering turns even as the weight distribution are to be equalized to original. Much added weight over original? Straight line highway driving at 70 mph and no wandering? Can’t say if I’d fully appreciate or discredit without an all conditions drive. Limited if any space for retro electric AC and what alterations if any were done to original heat venting system besides retaining those pivoting side windows.
Looks to have been a fine restoration at once upon a time with the original engine, albeit the equally superb and tidy conversion isn’t my cuppa.
I’d miss the classic flat-four flat back there resonance, oh and that wafting oily fuel aroma. Nonetheless very sharp looking all around and no sunroof.

My gripe with current factory built electric cars is they aren’t cars anymore; they are (mostly) too big, ugly rolling technology platforms with a lap top screen instead of a dash. This, on the other hand, is an electric CAR. No, it doesn't make the same sounds and smells as when it was RICE powered, but neither did a Model T sound or smell like the mule it replaced.
